Magic, curses and hair with a mind of its own

Kate Johnson writes romantic comedy. Her books have, in the past, usually only been available in ebook form although it looks now as though they are being published in paper as well. I found her books when I first had my Kindle and have been reading her ever since – see here for a review of the previous new title and a few suggestions of other titles by this author that I enjoyed.

Hex and the City is the second of a series of novels which are only peripherally related. It takes place in our world but one where witches are real and can affect the everyday world. Poppy is a witch who helps run a shop full of crystals and suchlike. Axl is a celebrity magician who does tricks on a large scale and is very clear that what he does isn’t magic. Then Axl meets Poppy and her colleague accidently sells him a pendant which Poppy had cursed. Poppy has to get the pendant back but along the way it is causing havoc in both their lives.

This is a book which doesn’t take itself too seriously but where the author has included a lot of interesting characters. Poppy has hair that has a life of its own and which almost becomes a character in its own right. Axl resembles a Viking and has a show based on this theme which attracts a lot of female followers. Poppy’s fellow witches are rather scary and don’t think a lot of her talents. Axl doesn’t believe in witches or magic. There are timeslips and even an animated mummy.

I enjoyed this story a lot because it was fun to read and the banter and sarcasm held my attention. The plot hangs together well and it’s a fast paced and amusing book.
