Advent Book 6 – Our world through plants

My Advent calendar books which I have unwrapped so far are emphasising wildlife and our world. From the first six books I have one about lions, one about kestrels and one about underground places in our world. You can find those reviews by scrolling down the Home Page on my blog. Today’s book is The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollanwhichis about plants. This is a comparatively new paperback and in good condition.

The author of this book takes four plants which are well used by humans (the apple, the tulip, marijuana and the potato) and tells us the history of these and their evolution because they are basic to everyday life. This is a sort of scientific history which also, I understand, looks at future genetic modification. Some of the reviews on Amazon do seem to indicate that it is very US focussed.

I am not a scientist and certainly not a botanist but I do like history and I have read books before which look at our world via certain consumer products/natural changes. If the book is more history than science it would fit me better and I will need any science content to be easy to understand because I don’t recollect having learned anything about botany in my academic life (which is now a long way in the past anyway).

The point of having an Advent book calendar was to try new books and The Old Curiosity Bookshop (see website here) from whom I purchased the books is certainly living up to my expectations for that.

No duds and no duplicates so far (and only one novel).
