Advent Book 7 – The life of a greatly loved writer

We have now reached day 7 of my Advent calendar and I am still looking forward to opening my package each day.

Today was a literary biography – The Tale of Beatrix Potter by Margaret Lane. I do enjoy a literary biography and I own many (Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Virginia Woolf, Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and the Brontes to name but a few). I haven’t previously read a biography of Beatrix Potter so this would be new to me.

I am actually not that fond of Beatrix Potter’s little books although I do understand how very popular they are – I don’t have to like the author to enjoy reading about their life. Even as a child I found the stories a bit twee and I wasn’t fond of animals wearing clothes and acting as humans. You cannot, however, deny how talented this woman was and many children have adored her writing and her illustrations. I shall be interested to learn about her life and her fame. I also understand that she was a farmer and conservationist which will have been unusual for a woman at the time.

This is a thin volume, with black and white photos. It will be a relatively quick read I think. The paperback book is in good condition.

A good choice and a book I look forward to reading.
