The fourteenth book in my Advent calendar is my second duplicate and it’s also the second book in the package by Michael Palin. The book is Erebus which is the story of a nineteenth century ship and its two expeditions on the second of which it was lost in the Arctic. The book also describes the finding of the ship in modern times. I read it some time ago and you can find my review here.
I enjoyed this story of two expeditions of exploration linked by the same ship and I liked the way in which the author told the story which is at times amusing and always respectful to the history.
I’m not unhappy to receive this book as I originally read the story on my Kindle. It is rather nice to have a paperback version of the book as it sits well on my shelf with other books about ships, polar exploration and disasters. This copy is in excellent condition and appears unread. It’s a book I would definitely read again but I am not sure that I would ever be able to justify to myself buying a second copy and now I don’t have to. I love my Kindle but I find it best for reading fiction – non-fiction books have photographs and maps which never come out as well.
I don’t want too many more duplicates in my calendar but I was aware that it was a risk – I read a lot of books and have wide-ranging tastes. Maybe tomorrow’s will be a book new to me.
