Advent Book 15 – A memoir of country life

Today’s book in my Advent calendar is a memoir. It is called The Spacious Days by Michael F Twist. I have never heard of the book or the author but it appears to be the story of his life growing up on a country estate in the 1920s and 30s. The author’s father was an estate manager and the book talks about farming and rural life, including managing the countryside and wildlife. This was a time in which country estates had many workers who lived in places where their family had been settled, often for generations – these days farming uses many fewer people.

I enjoy reading a memoir about a life very different to mine and this seems interesting. I often read books about people who have big country estates but I don’t think that I have ever read about how they are managed by the workers rather than the landowners. I am willing to have a go at this one.

This book appears to have been published by Farming Press which is/was a small press (yet again it is not a standard size) so I wonder if there is some reason why the book has limited appeal or whether it just couldn’t interest a major publisher. The copy I have is about 25 years old but is in very good condition and does contain some photographs.
