Two women – one missing and one found

CJ Lyons has published a number of books about her main character Lucy Guardino. I have read a few of these books. When last I read about Lucy she was an FBI agent but she now appears to be a private investigator, as part of a well-financed organisation that looks into cold cases.

Tommy Worth was a senior consultant whose life fell apart when his wife disappeared leaving him to care for their daughter alone. The police are convinced that he killed his wife although they can’t prove it and the press keeps writing new articles about the disappearance which attract a lot of attention. Tommy is now working with Lucy and the team. The book follows both Tommy and Lucy to tell different sides of the story.

A young woman is found in the hills having completely lost her memory. There are similarities with the disappearance of Tommy’s wife so Lucy reopens Tommy’s case at the same time as trying to find out what happened to the young woman and who she really is. As Lucy uncovers evidence it appears more and more likely that Tommy may be guilty and even his own family begin to doubt him.

This is an excellent puzzle of a story. I thought that seeing things from Tommy’s point of view worked well as the author explored his issues when no one believes him or trusts him. I was pretty sure from early on in the book who was responsible but it was interesting to work out why and how Tommy’s wife had disappeared and how the young woman with amnesia fitted in.

This is a quick and easy read. It stands alone if you haven’t read others in the series. Lucy is a persistent and talented detective and she has a team of interesting people working with her, each with their own quirks. I enjoyed it.
