I have a weakness for the romantic novels of Nora Roberts which I find easy reading and very enjoyable as part of my reading diet. Most of them tend to have some element of suspense and/or of the supernatural. Mind Games has a little of both these things.
Thea and Rem are siblings who are staying with their grandmother in Kentucky when news reaches them that their parents have been murdered. As it happens, Thea already knows this because she has a psychic gift which enables her to link with the murderer Ray Riggs who has a similar gift of his own. Thea is able to point the police in the right direction and as she grows up she uses her gift for good and occasionally to help the police. The link with Ray, however, becomes a problem and Thea finds herself under his psychic and then physical attack.
I thought that more of this story would be about how Thea uses her gift to help others and how she has to evade Ray but the book spends a lot of time telling the reader about the everyday life of the little family and then about Thea’s romance. I didn’t really like the balance between the suspense and the family story and wanted the book to be more of a crime or thriller novel. At times I tired of the romance and family story and wanted the book to speed up and develop some tension. This is obviously a personal preference and maybe shows that I prefer some of this author’s books more than others.
The development of the psychic gift also didn’t seem to be very defined. I never really understood exactly what Thea and Ray could do and where their boundaries were and it did seem that the author defined their gift by what she wanted to include in the plot and that maybe it had no limit.
This book was easy enough to read but it really didn’t hit the spot with me. Amazon shows me that it was very popular with other readers so if you fancy a heart-warming family story with some supernatural and suspense elements then you may well find it enjoyable.
