2024 Advent Book 14 – “The Librarian” by Salley Vickers

It had to happen sooner or later but we have now reached book fourteen of this year’s Advent calendar and the book chosen for today is one that I have already read. The Librarian by Salley Vickers (see my review here) is a book that I did originally choose for myself and read earlier this year. It’s set in the 1950s and is about a librarian, hence the title, who works in the children’s library of a small town and becomes involved in the lives of the people who use the library. It was a book that I should have loved but it didn’t really catch my imagination, although I did finish it.

I read over 300 books each year and have done so for most of my adult life so I have read a lot of books which is a problem with this sort of subscription as obviously the sender can’t know what is new to me and what is already familiar (I have been known to buy books for myself that I already own !). I am impressed that we have got this far in the Advent calendar before finding a duplicate – although there may be more to come in the remaining parcels.

This book is in excellent condition and I shall pass it to the lovely Oxfam bookshop in Holmfirth (see here) where they can resell it to help fund their work – they get my good quality castoffs to sell and I buy quite a few of their books as well.
