Book sixteen of my Advent calendar is Brazzaville Beach by William Boyd. I have read a number of books by this author and have a mixed reaction to his work. I think that Any Human Heart is possibly one of the best novels I have ever read. I also enjoyed Sweet Caress, Ordinary Thunderstorms and Restless. On the other hand, I didn’t really enjoy Love is Blind (see my review here) and I recently gave up on A Good Man in Africa. All of this will make it interesting to approach this book, which I haven’t read.
The story is set in Africa, as many of his books are, and is about a woman looking at her life and reviewing what she did and what she maybe should have done as well as what she regrets. This seems similar in scope to a few of his other books I have read. I shall be interested to see whether or not this is one of his books that I enjoy or one that I discard – it’s worth a go and he’s certainly an author whose books should be attempted. This is a copy in good condition.
