I have reached book eighteen in my Advent calendar which is The Indoor Boy by Antony Sher. It’s a satire or political commentary in the shape of a novel about a Jewish South African married to a white liberal woman during the period of apartheid. I am not at all sure that I would have picked this up and read it myself but having received it for Advent I will definitely read it – that, after all, is the point of letting someone else choose my books for this season.
The author is, of course, an actor but he is also a Jewish South African so his book should have some authenticity. I am a little wary of it because the quotations on the cover tell me that it is “funny” and I never seem to agree with others about what that means in a novel. It will be interesting to see what this book is like to read.
My copy is in excellent condition although the pages are a little brown at the edges – it was published in the early 1990s so that must be expected.
