Angels, vampires and mortals

I’ve been working my way through Nalini Singh’s novels about werewolves and people with supernatural powers (see my review here) which I have really enjoyed so I have now moved on to another urban fantasy series of hers.

Angel’s Blood is the first book of many which are set in our world but with a difference. Archangels, who are very powerful beings, control huge areas of land and their inhabitants. They have angels who do the work for them and the ten archangels are frequently fighting against one another for territory or control – they are near immortal beings and thus they can be cruel or capricious and they have many supernatural powers. Archangels can make ordinary people into vampires which makes them very long lived too but new vampires have to serve their angels and when they don’t they are hunted down and killed.

Elena is a Guild Hunter, she chases down and disposes of rogue vampires. Raphael is the archangel of New York. When he needs someone to help him determine what is going on with the vampires in his area Elena is the one that has the skills to assist. This is a fantasy novel but also a romance so you can tell what will happen to the relationship between the immortal and the very powerful being.

The series of books concentrates on Raphael and Elena but also on other angels and vampires in Raphael’s court. There is an overarching story about a great power rising and threatening all the archangels, and each individual novel has its own story and a romance as well.

These are great fun and quite addictive. Each book follows the same pattern but there are lots of differences as well and there is the overarching story which is moved on with each book. These are books for those of us who enjoy a light read with a satisfying plot and the chance to get to know characters over a number of volumes. If you like light, romantic fantasy where you don’t have to think too hard then you may well enjoy this novel.
