Murder in California

Jeffery Deaver is an American writer of fast paced crime novels, usually with a twist or two which you don’t always see coming. I have read and reviewed a few of his books in the past – see here, and here. For Fatal Intrusion he has teamed up with Isabella Maldonado to start a new series, the second of which is being released later this year. I like Deaver’s books and this story feels like his writing.

Carmen Sanchez is an agent with Homeland Security. She’s someone who plays by the rules and tries to do things properly. When her sister is attacked, however, she wants to find the perpetrator and she feels that things are not happening quickly enough and that her previous way of operating may not be what is needed. Her sister’s attack seems to be linked to a number of murders which have occurred in South California.

In order to assist with her investigation she links up with Professor Jake Heron who is a private security expert. His methods don’t follow the rules quite as much as Carmen’s which makes things awkward and matters are not helped by the fact that they have a past connection. As events escalate they have less and less time to find the murderer before there are even more murders.

This is an action novel where the investigators are pushed for time and the author gives them lots of blind alleys and red herrings to confuse matters. It’s a fast paced read and it does contain a number of twists but, unlike some novels, these don’t become so important that they obscure the characterisation and overall plot.

This is a quick but enjoyable read.
