Advent 2025 Book 4 – Twisty, dark and atmospheric

The next book in my Advent Calendar is also in great condition. It’s a psychological thriller called The Beloved Girls by Harriet Evans. Comments on the cover describe it as “gothic” and “dark” which could mean that it veers into horror or the supernatural in some way, although it may not. This doesn’t really worry me unless it becomes deliberately scary or particularly gory which I wouldn’t enjoy.

The story appears to be told from multiple viewpoints and three different times which I don’t mind at all provided that the author can keep these things straight for the reader. It’s set in an isolated country house and contains a family ritual and we are warned that it is full of twists.

I read fewer psychological thrillers than I did in the past because I got a bit tired of waiting for the twist and I often found that they started well but then fell apart a bit. Nevertheless, I shall give this book a chance because it looks interesting and because she is a popular writer whose works I haven’t tried. I will blog about what I think of it when I get to it, which might be a while.

With this book came a cardboard bookmark advertising the seller of the box. I save this type of bookmark and any other handy sized piece of cardboard to use for bookmarks because I always need a new supply as I lose them, leave them in books and otherwise dispose of them so this is very welcome.

  1. Not one I’ve read. I often have reservations once the term “gothic” appears, as it can be veering towards horror (which I don’t enjoy reading). Twists can also be misleading, as I can often see the supposed twist coming…

I look forward to reading your review.
