Jane Green writes books which are usually described as women’s fiction – a label I don’t like and which I find unhelpful. My nineteenth book of this year’s Advent calendar is a recent novel of hers called Sister Stardust. My records show that I have read one of this author’s novels in the past but I can’t remember anything about it and I haven’t picked up any of her more recent stories.
This book is set in 1960s Morocco where an established actress and model lives in some luxury. She is joined there by a younger woman with much less experience and the two become close friends and confidantes. There are secrets, however, and beneath the sunny exterior is something darker which could change lives forever.
This synopsis of the plot indicates to me that this is maybe not the light novel I had imagined but something more substantial and maybe more akin to a psychological thriller. It seems to be trying to convey something of the atmosphere of the time and the story of sex and drugs and rock and roll. I shall be interested to discover what the author has to say about this time and place.
With this book is a pair of ankle socks in pink, each embroidered with a heart. I have many, many socks but am always glad to have another pair so this is a very welcome goodie.
