Advent 2025 Book 20 – Smugglers, Cornwall and passion

My twentieth book in this year’s Advent calendar of books is a Virago Modern Classic’s edition of Frenchman’s Creek by Daphne du Maurier. It’s a lovely edition and in good condition although it has a previous owner’s name written on the inside cover – I don’t mind this at all and positively enjoy having evidence of previous owners in my books.

I haven’t read a lot of this author’s work although I loved My Cousin Rachel (see review here) and have recently read a collection of her short stories (see here). This new book is her historical novel set in seventeenth century Cornwall which is a love story featuring smugglers. It’s not a subject I would necessarily choose to read about but this author is good at writing adventure stories with people whose motives are not always clear. I am looking forward to reading this one and it’s nice to have another book of literary fiction among the romance, cosy crime and fantasy.

With this book is a pinky orange highlighter which will, I know, come in useful so I have placed it in my pen jar to be easily at hand.
