We’re back to fantasy for my twenty-first book of Advent (Christmas is getting ever nearer !). It is Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. I have heard of this author but never read any of her work. This book is the first of a series which has now reached its seventh volume and which includes a number of short stories and novellas. If I enjoy it I, therefore, have lots more to read set in the same world.
This book is described as Young Adult and features a young woman as a main character who appears to have powers that have not yet developed but which will make her able to control magical forces which might save her land. The heroine, Alina, is a soldier who finds herself having to unlock the secrets of her past as she is trained to use her powers.
The brief synopsis seems to indicate that this book contains many of the elements that make Young Adult fantasy so popular. How much I enjoy it will depend very much on the world the author has created and the characters with which she has inhabited it. I am hoping that it will be an immersive read filled with people that I want to know more about.
Included with this book was a hanging ornament made of twisted thread which I think is meant to be a rainbow, albeit a green, brown and beige one with white tassels. It’s a bit of an odd thing but I quite like it and have hung it above my desk with the wooden hearts I received earlier in the month.

I enjoyed Shadow and Bone and the other two books in the trilogy when I read them a few years ago. I did prefer the Six of Crows duology though as I felt the characters were more vivid
