The Summer Skies by Jenny Colgan is a contemporary novel and a romance. It’s a light-hearted and quick read, but entertaining and amusing in places. I like an easy, read from time to time and I also enjoy a good romance – I enjoyed this book and many of its sequels. I have read other books with different characters by the same author which I also found entertaining – see here for a review.
The story is set in the Scottish Highlands where Morag, who has been a successful commercial pilot, returns home when her grandfather needs help. She has lost a lot of her confidence when something went wrong on a flight but she has no time for introspection because her grandfather’s small air freight and passenger business is in trouble and needs her. Morag rises to the challenge but then finds herself on a Scottish island, after crashing, marooned except for the grumpy ornithologist who lives there on his own.
There are lots of characters in this story and they each have their own problems and challenges. None of this is very deep and the solutions to the problems are usually obvious from the start. It is, however, very well done and the setting of the Highlands and Islands enhances the enjoyment. I also appreciated the heroine having a difficult and skilled occupation and never being placed in the position where she has to choose between her job and her love.
If you like a light-hearted romance with engaging characters then I recommend that you try this one.
